My Theories on Ghosts: What they are, why they are here
I have many theories on ghosts! And I believe there are several different types of ghosts or spirits that we may come in contact with during our lives. To me, EVP is just another part of the spirit realm. EVP are as much a part of haunting as apparitions. Therefore, EVP falls into the same categories as ghosts, and my theories on the two are the same. EVP may come from the same types of origins as spirits.
Since the first records of mankind, it seems that humans have always tried to define and/or understand mortality. I feel this is why so many humans have an interest in ghosts and/or spirits. My personal feeling on this is that humans are the only creatures on Earth who do not openly converse with spirits. Watch any animal, they are very acutely aware of another plane of existence. But then, watch human babies – they too seem to sense something adults do not. Why do we teach our children to not believe what they have seen or experienced? Unfortunately, many children have this taken from them before they are even in pre-school, thereby teaching them that ghosts do not exist. Having said that, it has been shown that one out of every six Americans claim to have had a ghostly encounter at least once in their life, and one out of four Americans believe in ghosts. What I have noticed is that on the surface, many people seem afraid to admit it and might even deny it or make fun of other who admit it, but once a friend or respected equal has opened the discussion to it, almost everyone has a story.
As for American's who do believe in ghosts, it seems most believe they are the spirits of departed persons who have remained on Earth for some unknown reason. Personally, I feel that yes, that is true, but I don't think that is the only type of spirit on Earth.
I believe there are also other types of spirits, such as entities that are as old as the Earth itself, and perhaps older. Ever notice how odd happenings occur around Native American burial mounds or sacred grounds? I feel this is not because of what the Native American's placed there, but because the Native American's were more in touch with the land, and they knew these places were “special” to begin with. Some calls these locations Portals, and I believe these portals are doorways to another dimension. A good example of this is the Bell Witch Cave in Tennessee. Anyone familiar with this location knows that what goes on there is not a witch at all, and I don't feel it is a traditional ghost either.
I also believe in residual hauntings. This is where ghosts are actually telepathic images of the past. A sensitive person may see or hear past events as if they are witnessing them as they happen. Like in the movie “The Shining,” they are like looking at pictures in a book. The images and emotions at the time of the event were so strong they left a permanent mark on the location. This may happen anywhere, but a few examples of places that may have many marks would be funeral homes, hospitals, and theatres.
If one believes that time is nonlinear, it is quite plausible that what we are seeing as ghosts are actually the result of a time slip. In other words, the event happened in the past, but it might be briefly experienced in the present because of instability in time and space. I believe this may be possible, but I lean more towards the residual ghosts in this matter.
A theory I recently heard is one I think bears merit. It is quite common for a person to see a family member or loved one at or near the moment of that person's death. The theory is that the loved one might be unconsciously projecting their thoughts to the receptive person. But then, isn't that basically the same as our thoughts about ghosts? To me it is, but to others, this is a believable theory, while the existence of ghosts is not.
What ghosts are is clearly an open forum, but when talking about the spirits of humans, why do these ghosts make themselves known to us? As I stated earlier, one reason may be that they feel they have unfinished business. But I personally believe that it is more likely that the spirit is here because someone, whether they know it or not, is mentally calling that spirit to them. It is known that all humans have the potential to develop what is commonly called ESP. In the past decade there has been a huge push for previous non-believers to contact their “spirit guides” or “angels.” This is the same thing as far as I'm concerned. Most people have not developed this ability, and when they suddenly find themselves face to face with spirit activity they are unprepared and become very frightened. Stay with me here, this is where what some people call “bad” or “unwelcome” ghosts come from. My personal theory is that when a person sends this fear towards the spirit they unknowingly called, the spirit reacts by sending this strong emotion back toward the person. This may cause objects to be moved, changes in temperature, etc. The more emotion a person sends to the spirit, the more energy the ghost has. If you send happy thoughts, the spirit can manifest itself in a peaceful way, but if a person sends fear, the spirit has nothing but this fear to use.
